Seeding Transformational Growth

Federal Government Makes Multi-Year Investment in Trees for Life

Trees for Life is excited to share that the Ministry of Natural Resources Canada just announced a new pledge to support the charity. Through the 2 Billion Trees Program, NRCan is committed to providing Trees for Life $4 million over the next 5 years!

The funding is to support planting at least 24,000 trees annually in urban and suburban areas in southern Ontario.

“Trees are essential to our lives: they clean the air we breathe, their shade makes our urban spaces more enjoyable, they create new habitats for wildlife, and they help us adapt to our changing climate,” said the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. “Trees for Life’s ongoing planting projects are playing an important role in bringing these benefits to communities across southern Ontario and will help achieve our federal government’s ambitious goal of planting two billion trees over the next decade. Through this commitment, we are showing how collaborative work between governments and the non-profit sector can ensure that the right tree is planted at the right place at the right time for the benefit of all Canadians.”

The 2 Billion Trees Program provides up to 50% of the funding for eligible projects. Trees for Life and our planting partners are responsible for generating a matching value of in-kind and/or financial gifts to unlock the grant’s full potential. This means that public donations received over the next 5 years can be used for this purpose. When combined with investments from our partners, the impact of every dollar you donate will be multiplied up to four times! Most importantly, the multi-year pledge means we can plan years out to empower dozens more planting partners to augment, amplify, and accelerate the great work they are doing in greening our communities.

This funding is transformational for Trees for Life and will have a significant bearing on the trajectory of our work, especially with your continued commitment. It has already enabled us to support planting thousands more trees this fall.

The future at Trees for Life is a bright one. We look forward to sharing many more successes with you in the coming years in our quest to make Canada a happier, healthier place, one tree at a time.
